Techsploration is a program that encourages young women in high school to explore the sciences, trades and technology. One of the programs they provide is to link 6 young women in grade 9 and a teacher with a female role model.
Myself and three other mentors from UIT were invited to watch the Techsploration presentation at Eskasoni, the largest Native Reserve in Cape Breton. Students from Eskasoni were partnered with two women at REDSpace, where they were able to do some code, eat delicious pizza, and learn from the amazing, passionate women.
It was great to hear that students are already getting their hands on code and working with HTML to create websites themselves. I would have loved that opportunity as a grade 9 student! We helped them tone their pitch, and their public speaking techniques for a presentation they will give next month.
